Style and Substance in Church
Over the years, I’ve attended services in nine different church denominations. Church styles have ranged from liturgy-heavy to charismatic-lite. I like both. I look for signs that that those who plan and lead worship are helping people experience God. I’ve seen two good examples recently.
The church we attend in Arizona has a diversity you might expect, so when a singer sang the first verse of a hymn in Spanish and another singer did the second verse in English, I felt God’s love for every tribe and nation. I wish they had put the Spanish words on the screen so people could have sung together, but in whatever language they preferred.
Another Sunday, an attractive young man played a hot guitar and belted out songs in a voice no pop star could rival. As soon as the people in the pews began to sing along, he stepped away from the microphone, out of the limelight, and sang as one of the people. It was a powerful testimony to who is God and who is not.
This Easter, let us worship in spirit and truth, acknowledging the sacrifice Jesus made—for every tribe and nation, as a testimony to the God who loves His people equally.
