A summer’s day at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival last week was a smoky affair. OSF canceled outdoor performances. A walk through town required an air filter mask. Still, we saw three plays on the indoor stages, each as different from the others as artistic realism is from abstract impressionism. So, let’s compare.
Every year we can count on seeing great theater at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Like good books, great theater has the capacity to engage individuals in conversation. It might be an internal dialogue between reader and author over the treatment of a theme.
Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella (adapted by Bill Rauch and Tracy Young) might be a stretch for those who view theatre as entertainment; however, I come to praise the effort, not to bury it. Acknowledging that it is a two-Tylenol experience, it’s worth the headache.
