The words of faith
I have been mourning the loss of expression Christians are experiencing because the words of faith have been downgraded. Similar to the way that the California bond market lost value, our culture is no longer invested in words like purity, perfection or sacrifice, words that have specific meanings in Christian context. We have exercised our options to redefine words that make us uncomfortable. We prefer portfolios with a mix of worldviews that work for us.
I least expected rescue from Hollywood, but riding in on a white horse come actress Roma Downey and producer Mark Burnett proclaiming that “No one in the English speaking world can be considered literate without a basic knowledge of the Bible.” To draw us into the Word, they have created “The Bible,” a 10-part miniseries that dramatizes Bible stories. It debuts on the History channel on March 3.
Scripture lends itself well to film and stage. Jesus was a master of visual language. Bible story reenactments acquaint us the metaphors of the Christian faith. For those who have an ear, let them hear a word that draws them into the pages of timeless text where words have power to change lives.
No one in the English speaking world can be considered literate without a basic knowledge of the Bible.
